“All right, so let’s go over this all again. The paintings change, so we don’t know who the killer really is. We know something evil and bad happened here, for lack of better terms. We know there was a fight, but from an outsider looking in, everything seemed to be solved by the night of the murders,” Noah exclaimed. “Where the hell are we supposed to start?”

They’d opened a bottle of wine and sprawled out in the small living room. They were on their second glass as it neared four in the afternoon. The apartment was starting to feel like home to her despite her best attempts to keep her emotions at bay. She liked the other rooms well enough but having a cozy and well-loved atmosphere did wonder for her anxiety. Her mind was racing, trying to pick the best route for them without upsetting anyone who lived there. She’d seen one too many horror movies to be comfortable with accusing anyone of being a killer when they had no way out.

“I think we have to try to find the bodies,” Harper muttered.

“Oh, hell no—”

“Listen, I know it’s not what you want to hear, but what other options do we have? We agree they’re probably still here, right?”

“Yeah, but have you forgotten how this place likes to suck you in and not let you go? How many more times are we going to get lost and only get out by the skin of our teeth before they find our corpses in here, starved to death and still with alcohol in our systems? Come on, there has to be a better way.”

“If you have one, let’s hear it because that’s about all I’ve got. There’s no way we can ask Alice what she saw that night, and Adam is going to be shaken for a few days, if I’m guessing. I feel like asking him what he knows right now might push him that last bit over the edge.”

“We could keep talking to Mia,” Noah offered.

“You and I both know that today was a rare occurrence. Alice almost never leaves her alone, and the way we ran into her in the hallway…I don’t know. It was almost like she was spying on us. I didn’t like it.”

“Mia said she was always the suspicious one of the group.”

“And I totally get that, but I don’t want to ask her anything, at least not yet if we can help it,” Harper muttered.

“What’s your plan if we actually find bodies lying around this place? We can’t really call up the police and expect them to come running out here. We’re snowed it,” Noah said.

“I know,” she muttered. “I don’t really have a plan if that happens. Like you said, though, this place is a maze. Let’s just see what we can find out before we start worrying about problems we don’t have.”

“Fine,” he muttered. “But I’m telling Dad when we talk to him.”

Harper laughed and rolled her eyes, throwing a pillow from the couch at him before they finished their wine.
